about

Bryan Shields and Jennifer Shields are partners in the architecture and design studio flux, and professors in the School of Architecture at the University of North Carolina – Charlotte.   In their practice, research, and teaching, they strive to be agents of change: investigating cultural, spatial and environmental characteristics of a site or city in order to create an interface between human experience and the complexities of the urban context. Their professional work includes commercial, multi-family housing, and cultural projects designed and executed with an intent to sensitively engage the community and the environment. Their research has been published and presented in academic and cultural institutions in the US, Canada, and Europe.

Bryan received a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Virginia (2000) and a Master of Architecture from the University of Virginia in 2004. He has taught upper level studio courses in critical exploration as well as seminar courses focused on the mapping of social and phenomenological contexts in order to better situate design in the site and community. Prior to teaching, Bryan worked on numerous urban infill housing projects in Charlotte, North Carolina and Lexington, Kentucky while employed by David Furman Architecture, now known as Axiom Architecture.

Jennifer [Registered Architect] received a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Virginia (2000) and a Master of Architecture from the University of Virginia in 2004. She has taught upper level studios and seminars based on her research considering the phenomenological qualities of the built environment that contribute to a multi-sensory experience and creation of place. Prior to teaching, Jen worked on numerous commercial, retail and residential projects in North Carolina and South Carolina while at Tobin Dudley, now known as Tobin Starr and Partners.
