The studio project was to design a school for the estranged children of the Lower Manhattan Waterfront’s last low-income neighborhood. The idea was to create a new type of pier that could react to the ebbs and flows of the East River’s tides. The school was anchored on land by the gymnasium and community center while the classrooms grew with the children out into the water. At the bulkhead the pier was capped by the center of knowledge, the library.
