An Algorithm for Suburbia
A house can adapt and change to accommodate the idiosyncrasies of the inhabitant. The overlap of programmatic functions /actions allows for a space to flex according to use rather than prescribing a series of single use rooms. eco-action_House — simultaneously siteless and site responsive — derives its orientation from climatic conditions rather than specific physical adjacencies. The kit of parts for ea_House is driven by functional and ecological responsibility rather than formal preconceptions.
ea_House provides 1000 square feet fundamental to suburban living, and presumes additions if and when necessary. ea_House can be bought into by an individual or couple with the understanding that the prototype can be be transformed to accommodate a family of five. The size of the suburban house is no longer driven by an arbitrary provision for the largest possible spatial needs, but rather by the evolving desires of the particular occupant.
Proposition : Core
The infrastructural core is seen as the modern day hearth. All of the systems and flows that come to and from the house are organized within this piece. The utilitarian spaces of the house [closets, bathroom, laundry] are contained within the volume as well as the stair whose vertical shaft and clerestory windows aid in natural ventilation. The core carves into the ground to form the basement and plug into existing utilities while simultaneously opening to the sky for grey water collection. The storage shed is a subtraction from the core, and sits atop the cistern to mark the edge of the carport.
Proposition : Living
The living spaces within the house overlap to remain occupied for a larger percentage of time than a single purpose room. Furniture is the threshold and spatial delineator but also moves to create larger, collective spaces. Clearly defined kitchen, living and dining spaces can evolve into one great room and even a spare bedroom when the space would otherwise lie unused.
Proposition : Sleep / Work
The bedroom and workspace float above the kitchen and dining room. With furniture offering visual protection, the bedroom works as a sleeping porch in the summer months, facilitating a continuous airflow. Conversely a series of screens provide a thermal barrier and trap heat within the bedroom during the winter months.
