södermalm

Our favorite neighborhood in Stockholm and, not coincidentally, where we lived last summer. The view of the city center and the sunset beyond is second to none – many a hot air balloon drift overhead during this time of year.
långholmen

This island was originally a rocky outcropping like the majority of the Archipelago and was occupied only by the city prison. The inmates covered the island in fill dredged from the waterway there in the 18th century, creating a lush environment unique to this island. The prison has since been converted into a hotel and [...]
gamla stan

The oldest part of Stockholm – this medieval settlement is home to the palace and parliament. It is also where the Crown Princess was married – it’s a fantastic place to people watch, we would often get a cup of coffee in the evening and relax in the main square.
östermalm

This is the Central Park West of Stockholm. It is THE place to live and is home to some of the nicer boutiques and pedestrian-only streets in the city. The architecture is incredibly rich and the cafes are always exploding with energy out into the streets.
norrmalm

Center city, higher density and home to more modern buildings since rebuilding efforts of the 1950s. The Stadsbibliotek and some historic buildings and churches are in this neighborhood.
millesgården

1908-1955 Carl Milles The house and studio of the sculpture Carl Milles. I can spend all day at this project – the site along the cliffs of Ladingo provide a breathtaking view back to Stockholm and to be among the dozens of sculptures, many of which were studies for commissioned works around the world, is [...]
stockholms stadshuset

[Stockholm City Hall] 1911-1923 Ragnar Östberg An impressive piece of architecture that straddles the line between National Romanticism and Modernism was built around the same time as the library, to give you some context of just how bold the library was at the time. The materials and detailing are quite inspired – somehow the building [...]
skeppsholmen

This tiny island is home to the Art and Architecture Museums and Architecture Library. We did not get to go to the Architecture Library last year as it was closed for the summer by the time we got back to Stockholm – this year it did not disappoint. The first day we went Jenny got [...]
markuskyrkan

[Saint Mark's Church] 1956-1963 Sigurd Lewerentz The textures in the church are impossible to capture in photograph and the siting of the project within the trees of Bjorkhagen [translated as Birch Haven] is incredibly humble. This is Jenny’s favorite piece of Swedish architecture.
nynäshamn

This was our only trip outside of Stockholm. We took a one hour train ride south of the city and rented bikes and rode along the coast of the Baltic Sea. Asplund’s summer house is located near this town but it’s remoteness makes it difficult and dangerous to get to without a car. Alas – [...]
skogskyrkogården

[Woodland Cemetery] 1914-1940 Gunnar Asplund and Sigurd Lewerentz Asplund and Lewerentz won the competition for this project in their late 20′s. Asplund died quite young and was one of the first funerals in the Chapel of Remembrance he designed in Phase 2 of the project. Lewerentz is responsible for the “Grove of Remembrance,” the cluster [...]
kronprinsessbröllopet

Over 2 million people flooded Stockholm on Friday and Saturday to get a glimpse of the kortege that took the Crown Princess and her husband around the city by carriage and boat. The Navy was in the harbor, the Army lined the streets, and the Air Force flew over at a time choreographed to the [...]
engelbrektskyrkan

Beautiful National Romanticist church on top of a hill overlooking the city, designed by Asplund’s professor, Lars Wahlman.
stockholms stadsbibliotek

[Stockholm Public Library] 1924-1928 Gunnar Asplund Modernism came to Stockholm with this incredibly simple and powerful plan/diagram of the circle within the square.
fargfabriken

We’ll end with where it all began. This is the first project to catch Jenny’s eye in her research last year. This former munitions factory, turned paint factory is now a modern art and architecture gallery. They have had a variety of artists come through over the years, including and installation where David Byrne [of [...]
högalidskyrkan

A church designed by a contemporary of Asplund (Ivar Tengbom) occupying a rocky outcropping on the island of Sodermalm. We lived on this island last summer and somehow never noticed it. The interior treatment of the walls is quite thoughtful and beautiful, transitioning from a smooth plaster coating on the brick to a lighter, rougher [...]
architecture in miniature

For a little fun I took a few of our aerial shots and applied a few photoshop effects to give the appearance of tilt-shift photography. For those of you who have not seen tilt-shift photography before it is normally used for architectural purposes to focus on particular depth of field, but it can also be [...]

Our detours from Stockholm included a day trip to Sigtuna, a medieval town on Lake Malaren, and Sandhamn, an island in the outer archipelago. From there we rented a kayak and paddled around to a number of uninhabited islands, including the only sand beach in the archipelago. It was amazing to see such a beautiful [...]

The album from our last week in stockholm includes Stockholm City Hall built in the 1920s, the Nordiska Museet [Museum of Swedish Culture], and Millesgarden, the home, studios, and sculpture garden of sculptor Carl Milles.

We’ve had a few sunny days since our last correspondence – and we’ve kept quite busy in the meantime. The highlights included a meeting with the Swedish Institute [ the people who awarded the grant to Jen ], and visiting an old munitions factory turned art gallery. The Volvo Ocean Race [ a 9 month [...]

We’ve been greeted with rain everyday since our return to Stockholm. We’ve gone on several project scouting trips but today was the first day i got to use the camera other than inside a few museums [which Stockholm has plenty of] – even in the overcast environment the post-industrial projects have proven to be quite [...]
[norway] detour
![[norway] detour](http://fluxwurx.com/photography/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/detour-norway-1-150x150.jpg)
We are back in Stockholm after completing our road trip around central and western Norway. Driving 950 miles we saw some of the most breathtaking landscapes I could ever imagine in addition to several wonderful small fjord towns and two other museums. We have tried to include pictures that best capture the scale of these [...]
oslo

We’ve had an exciting few days in Oslo. We got to see Jen’s parents [ they were in scandinavia leading the Bucknell summer abroad program ] and experience a Norwegian summer – the weather has been quite a bit cooler than malmo. we encountered our first rainy days of the trip – but the city [...]
