This island was originally a rocky outcropping like the majority of the Archipelago and was occupied only by the city prison. The inmates covered the island in fill dredged from the waterway there in the 18th century, creating a lush environment unique to this island. The prison has since been converted into a hotel and hostel – which is where we stayed during our visit. This is the island with the closest beach to the city and it is quite popular even in the brisker temperatures of early summer.
