Although long neglected, the Seaholm Intake Facility sits like an unpolished gem along Lady Bird Lake. counterCURRENT seeks to reconnect the people of Austin with both this architectural artifact and the lake itself. Cesar Chavez Street, Lady Bird Lake, and the movement of people on the hike and bike trail establish a strong east/west grain across the site and through this portion of the city. We propose the interweaving of a complimentary grain, based on the architectural rhythm of the intake buildings. The title of this project, counterCURRENT, speaks to the establishment of a cross-grain, as well as the uniqueness of the proposed cultural amenity for the city. counterCURRENT employs minimal physical intervention within the existing architecture to preserve the material and spatial character of the historic intake facility. Modular, tectonic components consisting of steel framing, translucent channel glass, and metal infill comprise the material palette, to complement the existing concrete structure and the transformation of the adjacent power plant.
